P5–7 Visit the Ulster American Folk Park

25th Mar 2026

Our P5–7 pupils enjoyed a fantastic day at the Ulster American Folk Park, where they explored life in Ireland during the time of the Great Famine. From stepping aboard the iconic famine ship to sitting in a traditional school house, the children listened to the stories, struggles, and journeys of those who lived through this important chapter of Irish history.

The highlight for many was the chance to walk onto the emigrant ship, experiencing the cramped conditions that thousands of families endured as they left Ireland in search of a better life. Inside the school house, pupils compared modern classrooms with those of the 1800s, with wooden desks, chalk slates, and strict rules!

Throughout the day, pupils met costumed guides, asked thoughtful questions, and showed great interest as they learned about the Famine in Ireland, the impact it had, and the brave journeys many families undertook.

It was an educational, engaging, and fun-filled trip, and the children returned buzzing with new knowledge and curiosity about the past. A big thank-you to everyone at the Ulster American Folk Park for making the experience so special.
